PICK UP!

PICK UP! (vol.12) Yuto Konishi / Graduate School of Engineering

There are more than 400 diverse students are enrolled in “Future-Creation (MIRAI)” Course.
In this section, we will focus on students who are engaged in unique activities and introduce their achievements and activities from their own perspectives.
The 12th student is Yuto Konishi (D1) of the Graduate School of Engineering.

Research activity and for the next generation chemistry

Were there many opportunities to get science events when you were in elementary or junior high school? I have loved science since I was a child, and my parents often took me to the science museum, so I attended science events many times. I feel this is the reason why I want to become a scientist (chemist). I strongly feel that such outreach activities are essential for the development of the next generation.

I had the opportunities to attend science events through participation in the High School Chemistry Grand Prix and a research program at Okayama University when I was a high school student, and now I conduct research on photochemistry in graduate school. I also join “Pikari Kagaku”, which is a group conducting outreach activities of photochemistry teachers and students from Kyushu University and other universities, and teach some classes at junior high and high schools and children’s science museums. I also designed the Pikari Kagaku image character “Pikarin” using my hobby skill of drawing illustrations. I feel that I would be happy if there will be next generation chemists through our outreach activities.

I am also enthusiastic about my research and participated in academic conferences. I have participated in 17 conferences in Japan and abroad and have received 8 awards for oral and poster presentations in Japanese and English, such as the Best Poster Award at the 29th IUPAC Symposium on Photochemistry and the Excellent Student Presentation Award (oral) at the Annual Meeting on Photochemistry 2024. I would like to continue to devote myself to various activities related to my research, aiming not only to participate in academic conferences but also to publish my research papers.
