Integrated Research Project Students Interview (Part 2)

Continuing from the part 1, we interviewed Mr. KANEKO Kojiro (Graduate School of Science) and Mr. Tham Yik Foong (Graduate School of Information Science and Electrical Engineering) about their Integrated Research Project. Please take a look!

Q7. How do you actually conduct this joint research?
When it comes to conducting our joint research, our approach is to schedule in-person meetings occasionally. These sessions allow us to discuss major issues and map out subsequent steps, which can be challenging to address online. After these face-to-face meetings, we primarily use Slack as our communication platform, ensuring that we keep each other informed about progress and any new developments.

Q8. How did you spend your research budget of 500,000 yen? What could you do/what would you like to do if you had another 500,000 yen?
Our research is basically theoretical or computational, so now it doesn’t cost much. We will use the research budget to purchase computational resources or to pay for the article processing charge. Another budget would enable us to purchase more high-end computational resources.

Q9. Do you think there is a good chance of presenting this joint research at a conference or writing a paper? What percentage do you think there is?
We do not expect to be able to do so immediately, but we believe it is possible to make presentations at conferences and write papers in the future. We believe there’s at least an 80% chance we can publish our results.

Q10. What are your future prospects and aspirations for this joint research?
We would like to continue our research and hope that it will lead to some kind of results, such as conference presentations or publications. We would also like to use this joint research as a stepping stone to be interdisciplinary researchers.

Q11. What are your dreams for the future and what kind of person do you both aspire to be?
Kojiro: I don’t have any specific dreams. However, I hope to always cherish my excitement and be a person who has the courage and perseverance to try something without hesitation, even in a different field, if necessary.
Tham: I am on a path similar to my supervisor, Danilo Vargas, aspiring to become a professor in my field and establish my own lab, with a primary focus on continued research in artificial intelligence. I aim to further advance this field and making contribution to our society. I look forward to joining the ranks of figures like Geoffrey Hinton, Yoshua Bengio, Fei-Fei Li and more, who have made significant contributions to the AI field, all the while maintaining humility and a commitment to educating the younger generation.

Q12. Please leave a message for younger course students to take on the Integrated Research Project and joint research.
Don’t be afraid to reach out to other students when you see an opportunity to collaborate on something, even if it’s just for fun.

Thank you so much for your cooperation, Kaneko-san and Tham-san!
We wish your project will develop further.
