本研究は、20世紀オーストリアの作家ヘルマン・ブロッホの文学・思想を中心に、(1)文学作品における言語的時間の止揚(「同時性」)、(2)世紀末ウィーンの記憶論、以上の二つを主題とし、その関連を検討している。時間芸術としての長編小説の限界を「同時性」というコンセプトによって克服しようとしたブロッホのモダニズムを、彼の初期エッセイおよび世紀末ウィーンの文化的コンテクストから読み解くことを目指す。
