Introduction of the Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP)

The Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) is an international program that promotes “unique international interdisciplinary research” aimed at elucidating the advanced and complex mechanisms of living organisms and providing the results for the benefit of humanity at large. The HFSP was established at the initiative of the Japanese government and has been supporting innovative cross-border collaborative research by scientists around the world for more than 30 years with financial support from 15 countries and regions, including Japan. From Japan, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) provide the budget, and AMED contributes to the promotion of the program.

The “HFSP Fellowships (Postdoctoral Fellowships)” program helps early-career researchers develop a broad range of research skills by moving to a new research field outside of Japan. More than 400 Japanese researchers have been awarded Long-Term Fellowships (LTF) and Cross-Disciplinary Fellowships (CDF).

The award of a Long-Term Fellowship (LTF) or Cross-Disciplinary Fellowship (CDF) can be of great significance in the development of your research career. Therefore, we hope that you will visit the following website (*) to motivate your application from your graduate student period and strategically prepare for your post-degree application.

(*) The HFSP program is reviewed and administered by the International HFSP Organization (HFSPO) located in France, not by the Japanese support organizations (MEXT, METI, AMED). Therefore, for original and up-to-date information, please refer to the following website published by HFSPO.

Challenge Interdisciplinary Research Abroad at the Postdoc Stage

-Date: Tuesday, November 22, 2022 4:30pm-6:00pm
-Lecturer: Dr. Takashi Tsuchimatsu (Graduate School of Science, The University of Tokyo), Dr. Tomoko Sakai (AMED HFSP)
-Target: Young researchers (including graduate students) who aim to study abroad or obtain a post overseas.
Instructors who wish to host outstanding young researchers from abroad and senior researchers who will serve as mentors

-Overview: This program is designed to support young researchers who are challenging a new research field abroad during their post-doctoral period. Did you know that there are international fellowships that support this dynamic gear change? We are pleased to feature the Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) Postdoctoral Fellowships, which encourage such challenging research abroad. This fellowship is a competition of ideas for postdoctoral fellows. The fellowships are highly regarded overseas because of the strong significance of the awards. Therefore, there is a high possibility that it will strongly influence on your subsequent career development. If your idea is adopted, your destiny will change.
So what exactly do the judges look for when scoring postdoctoral fellow ideas? In this webinar, a lecturer with experience as a reviewer will be invited to talk about the important points in the review process, and AMED, which is in charge of domestic support for HFSP projects, will provide details on the fellowship application process.
